Still wondering about loss of mucus plug early in pregnancy?

I posted a question yesterday, but didn’t get many good answers. Basically, I’m 18 weeks pregnant today, and I am almost positive I lost my mucus plug yesterday. I lost a big piece of mucus early in the day, then a smaller piece later, and then a little bit last night. Some people say it isn’t possible, but I did a little research and did find out that it CAN happen. So now I’m just wondering if it can cause problems or increase the risk of infection?

Also, I have been having really bad cramps for a few hours today, and just don’t feel right. I’ve had some cramping before, but not like this. It’s really uncomfortable. I’m not really stressing about it, but I would rather be safe than sorry. I think I’m going to go to the hospital just to have them monitor the baby and make sure everything is ok. But I just want to know what to expect if I did lose my mucus plug? Or if anyone knows anything about losing it early? If and what kinds of problems it can cause, etc.? Thanks for any help.

Congrats on the baby-to-be! I’m also 18 weeks pregnant with a little boy. When I was 9 weeks pregnant I had bad cramps that I ignored because I didn’t want to bother my doctor or look stupid for going to the doctor for no reason. That night I woke in a pool of blood because the baby’s placenta had ruptured. The EMTs that took me to the ER collected the solid chunks of blood, which turned out to be my mucus plug. I was on bed rest for several weeks while the placenta healed and now because I am missing my mucus plug I have been put on complete pelvic rest (no sex, swimming, or baths) to help decrease the risk of infection.

Try to collect whatever you think is your mucus plug and take it with you to the doctor. The cramps might just be the baby moving, and the mucus you are passing might just be the normal amount of extra fluids a pregnant woman makes. Go ahead and make a doctors appointment so you have peace of mind.

Best of luck with your baby!
