About Pregnancy – What Are The Early Signs?   by Sandra Nelson

Although missing of your menstrual period can alert you to the possibility of pregnancy, this could be a result of many other occurrences in the body or the environment. But is it possible to know if you’re pregnant even before you begin to miss your period? Indeed you can. Here are just a few methods you can use:

1. Basal Temperature

Your basal body temperature is the lowest temperature attained by the body during rest (usually during sleep). It is generally measured immediately after awakening and before any physical activity has been undertaken. If your basal temperature is maintained at a high level when it is time for your period, then you can be sure that you are pregnant.

Digital thermometers generally read to an accuracy of at least 0.1ºF (0.05ºC) and so are suitable for monitoring basal temperatures. Some digital thermometers are sold as “basal thermometers” and have extra features such as a larger display, expanded memory functions, or beeping to confirm the thermometer is placed properly. Your local pharmacist can assist you with making your selection.

2. Tenderness of the Breasts

A clear fullness in the breasts is one of the first signs of pregnancy after you’ve conceived. Most likely you will notice this even before missing your period.

3. Frequent Urination

Because of an increase in the level of the hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin(HCG), urination occurs more often. Actually, to check for pregnancy, one of the first tests your physician will perform is a urine test to check for this hormone.

4. Cramping Sensation

As the body gets ready to accommodate the growing embryo your ligaments will tighten and a cramp is felt by some women. The severity of this sensation will vary from person to person. But this cramping or tightness is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.

5. Missing your Period

As mentioned earlier, you can miss your period for a host of reasons other than pregnancy, such as stress, irregularity in exercise etc. But missing a period is a good reason to purchase a pregnancy test kit if you suspect that you may be pregnant.

Once you’ve established that you are pregnant, it is the course of wisdom to engage the services of a competent physician and arrange for the proper care of both you and your new baby.

Motherhood brings with it great joys and responsibility as you will now want to give attention to your health and that of your baby. This embraces proper nutrition, rest, medical care, exercise and other healthy habits.
