What can I expect at my first visit to a high risk doctor for high blood pressure during pregnancy?
I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with my first. At my routine appointment today my blood pressure was 140/90 which is high but usually it runs 170/80 which is very high. My blood pressure is always high at the office when they take it but i also have it checked by my mother who is a nurse every other day and it usually runs in the 130′s over 70′s. I am always nervous going to the doctor for checkups and I have no idea why. Anyway, my obgyn referred me to a high risk doctor and I was wondering what I can expect to happen at this visit. What are the treatment options and what are the odds that I will have to be hospitalized for the remainder of my pregnant or even deliver at 31 weeks? I am scared to death which i know only makes this worse as well but any serious answers would be greatly appreciated. Also there is no protein in my urine and i do not have gestational diabetes. I only get short of breath sometimes, other than that I feel fine. Thank you all in advance again.
It will likely be the same as your other appointments. They may choose to put you on a medication like aldomet to keep your pressures lower. If your pressure cannot be controlled you might need to be hospitalized and put on stronger medications, like magnesium sulfate. If THAT didn’t work, or if your baby is showing signs of distress or has restricted growth, then induction might be considered at some point.
